It’s Your Body: Choose Minimally Invasive

Today that choice is yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery. In traditional “open” surgery the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm incisions. Each incision is called a “port.” At each port a tubular instrument known as a trochar is inserted. Specialized instruments and a special camera known as a laparoscope are passed through the trochars during the procedure.

At the beginning of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to provide a working and viewing space for the surgeon. The laparoscope transmits images from the abdominal cavity to high-resolution video monitors in the operating room. During the operation the surgeon watches detailed images of the abdomen on the monitor. This system allows the surgeon to perform the same operations as traditional surgery but with smaller incisions.

2. What is hysteroscopic surgery?

Hysteroscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which no incision is given. Rather the natural passage through the cervix is used to introduce the hysteroscope into the uterus for both diagnosis as well as treatment of uterine conditions.

3. What are the advantages of endoscopic surgery?

Compared to traditional open surgery, patients often experience less pain, a shorter recovery, and less scarring with endoscopic surgery.

4. What kinds of operations can be performed using endoscopic surgery?

Almost all gynecological surgeries can be performed using the laparoscopic/ hysteroscopic technique. In the past there had been concern raised about the safety of laparoscopic surgery for cancer operations. Recently several studies involving hundreds of patients have shown that laparoscopic surgery is safe for certain cancers also.

5. What is the difference between Obstetrics and Gynaecology?

Obstetrics focuses on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care for both the mother and the baby. Gynaecology deals with the overall health of the female reproductive system, including issues unrelated to pregnancy. Obstetrics and gynaecology (OB/GYN) specialists may provide care in both areas.

6. Do Gynaecologists deliver babies?

Yes, some gynaecologists also provide obstetric care and deliver babies, but not all gynaecologists do. Obstetricians, who specialise in pregnancy and childbirth, are specifically trained for delivery, while gynaecologists focus on the female reproductive system's health.

7. Can a Gynaecologist do surgery?

Yes, gynaecologists can perform surgical procedures related to the female reproductive system, including hysterectomies, ovarian surgeries, and others. They often receive surgical training as part of their specialisation in gynaecology.

8. Can I travel during pregnancy?

Yes, you can travel during pregnancy, but it's essential to consult with your healthcare provider before making any travel plans. They can assess your specific situation, provide guidance, and recommend precautions based on your pregnancy's stage and any potential risks.

9. When would I need to see an Obstetrician?

You would need to see an obstetrician when you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as they specialise in prenatal care, childbirth, and postpartum care for both you and your baby.
