Minimally Invasive Surgery/ Endoscopic Surgery
The BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital vision is to serve women by advancing the safest and most efficacious diagnostic and therapeutic techniques that provide less invasive treatments for gynecologic conditions. Minimally invasive gynecology is an option all women should consider before committing to any gynecologic procedure.
It’s Your Body
If you could choose between surgery that requires a large incision …versus a minimally invasive technique that involves lower risk of infection, minimized scarring, less blood loss, decreased post-operative pain, and generally quicker recovery time… which would you choose? Today that choice is yours.
What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery. In traditional “open” surgery the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm incisions. Each incision is called a “port.” At each port a tubular instrument known as a trochar is inserted. Specialized instruments and a special camera known as a laparoscope are passed through the trochars during the procedure. At the beginning of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to provide a working and viewing space for the surgeon. The laparoscope transmits images from the abdominal cavity to high-resolution video monitors in the operating room. During the operation the surgeon watches detailed images of the abdomen on the monitor. This system allows the surgeon to perform the same operations as traditional surgery but with smaller incisions.
What is hysteroscopic surgery?
Hysteroscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which no incision is given. Rather the natural passage through the cervix is used to introduce the hysteroscope into the uterus for both diagnosis as well as treatment of uterine conditions.
What are the advantages of endoscopic surgery?
Compared to traditional open surgery, patients often experience less pain, a shorter recovery, and less scarring with endoscopic surgery.
What kinds of operations can be performed using endoscopic surgery?
Almost all gynecological surgeries can be performed using the laparoscopic/ hysteroscopic technique. In the past there had been concern raised about the safety of laparoscopic surgery for cancer operations. Recently several studies involving hundreds of patients have shown that laparoscopic surgery is safe for certain cancers also.
This service caters to women with urological problems and pelvic floor defects. Though not life threatening these problems severely impair quality of life. Traditional surgeries for these have been found to have many limitations and are being increasingly replaced with more scientific and physiological procedures. We provide complete diagnostic evaluation for problems related to the vagina, uterus, bladder, urethra and rectum with specialisation in the treatment of
- Urinary leak or incontinence (stress, urge or mixed)
- Pelvic organ prolapse (uterus, bladder or the rectum)
- Difficulty in voiding or emptying the bladder or bowel
- Chronic pelvic pain (including interstitial cystitis)
Both surgical and nonsurgical options are explored to customize the treatment to the patients need.
The service deals with endocrinal or hormonal dysfunction in women. Though hormonal problems are more common at the two extremes of reproductive life they can happen at any time in a women’s life.
The aspects dealt with are:
- Growth and development
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Peripubertal obesity
- Menstrual problems
- Problems related to sexuality and contraception
