Histopathology & Cytopathology

The Histopathology and Cytopathology Unit offers an advanced and accurate opinion on specimens from Gynaecology, Urology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Respiratory Medicine and highly specialised areas such as Neurology, Oncology, and Transplant units.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) laboratory

Immunohistochemistry laboratory is a comprehensive lab equipped with state-of-the-art automation and technology to provide outstanding diagnostic and prognostic applications in the field of oncology.  With proper quality control program, the IHC lab performs more than 80 diagnostic as well as prognostic markers. It assures reliable and reproducible results in minimal turnaround time. The major highlights of the lab include:

Cytopathology Laboratory

The Cytopathology laboratory is well equipped with state-of-the-art screening and diagnostic facilities for testing gynaecologic, Non -gynaecologic and fine-needle aspiration specimens in the shortest possible turnaround time.

  • Gynaecologic services include Pap smear reporting (Bethesda 2001) & outsourced facilities for HPV testing and liquid-based thin prep Pap smear.
  • Non-gynaecological samples include: bronchial specimen, cytology of fluids, USG guided and CT guided FNA and CBD brushing. 
  • The laboratory also offers FNA facilities to various superficial sites in lab and bedside.
     

Clinical Biochemistry

The Biochemistry Unit at the department performs routine and specialised biochemical tests such as therapeutic drug monitoring, tumour markers, and hormone assays. The turnaround time is on par with international standards.

Clinical Microbiology

The Microbiology Unit is equipped with latest and standardised equipment including BACTEC 9120, MGIT960, Phoenix BD Id/AST, Minineph, Minividas, Architect, etc. and advanced nucleic acid detection techniques for rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Clinical Haematology & Immuno-haematological

The Haematology Unit provides a state-of-the-art investigative facility for comprehensive diagnosis of haematological disorders. It has a dedicated laboratory offering routine laboratory tests and specialised facilities for the study of haemostatic, haemolytic and oncologic disorders. Services offered at the unit

  • For the diagnosis of haemoglobinopathies, acid and alkaline electrophoresis and haemoglobin HPLC are developed
  • Flow cytometry of blood, bone marrow, and lymphomas (it serves the need of haematopoietic stem cell bone marrow transplant unit)

Molecular Biology

The Molecular Biology unit offers comprehensive diagnostic facilities for HLA typing. It also offers molecular tests for infectious diseases and haematological disorders that are proposed to be added in due course.

Transfusion Medicine

The Transfusion Medicine Unit at the department is a comprehensive unit offering safe and advanced blood transfusion services such as leuko-depleted, Micro-particle ELISA and CMIA tested blood. Our team of expert pathologists use advanced technology to collect and process blood for preparation of components, storage of blood and blood products and for apheresis procedures.

The unit is equipped with latest immuno-haematological testing techniques used for diagnosis and testing compatibility of the blood. Our unit is licensed by Drug Controller General India and follows stringent quality control practices that include testing of a defined number of units of each product for the appropriate parameters.  The unit aims to promote the use of various components to ensure optimum utilisation of blood and also to ensure that the patient receives the safest possible blood by testing for various markers. Blood utilization is optimised by separating blood into its various components like platelet concentrate, red cell concentrate, fresh frozen plasma and cryo-precipitate.

We also receive samples from outside for work-up of auto and alloimmune haemolytic anaemias.

Our Transfusion Medicine unit is among one of the few transfusion Centres in the country to have received the coveted NABH accreditation from the Quality Council of India as an independent entity.
