What is minimal access surgery?

Minimal access surgery involves one or more small incisions (usually only 1/4" long) rather than a large incision that results in less pain,  shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.

What are the alternate names for minimal access surgery?

The alternate name for minimal access surgery is laparoscopic surgery.

What is the procedure type?

It is a minimally invasive procedure.

How to prepare for minimal access surgery?

  • The surgeon may advise some invasive (colonoscopy/ endoscopy/ hysteroscopy) or non-invasive imaging tests such as complete blood count (CBC), blood liver enzyme tests, blood chemistry tests, electrocardiogram (EKG), and chest X-ray.
  • The doctor may advise the patient to stop blood-thinning medications and antihistamines.
  • You will be advised not to  eat or drink from the night before the surgery.
  • Your doctor may advise some antibiotics to be taken before the procedure, depending on the type of surgery.

What are the additional types of minimal access surgery?

The additional types of minimal access surgery are-

  • Laparoscopy- When a telescope is used for the abdomen, it is known as laparoscopic surgery.
  • Thoracoscopy- When a telescope is used for the chest, it is known as thoracoscopy.
  • Arthroscopy- When a telescope is used for joints, it is known as arthroscopy.

How is it performed?

  • Anaesthesia- Most of the minimal access surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia. However, there are some procedures that are done under local anaesthesia.
  • Incision- A Small Incision is made, and a camera is inserted into the body that allows better visibility of the surgical site. Additional incisions may be required for other instruments. A device is inserted through the incision to inflate the area so that surgeons get better accessibility to the surgical site.
  • Closure of site- After the procedure, the incision is closed with staples and sutures.
