A Donated Heart from Jaipur Saves a Man with
a Terminally Ill Heart
THE CASE
A 56-year old man, suffering from an incurable heart condition called
Dilated Cardiomyopathy, was brought to BLK Super Speciality
Hospital. He had reached a critical stage where he could not perform
his routine day to day activities without getting breathless and had
experienced multiple episodes of sudden loss of consciousness. It was
fortunate that he recovered from these episodes of illnesses as any
one of these could have been fatal for the patient given his precarious
clinical condition.
In view of the severity of his condition, a Heart Transplant was the
only ideal option for the patient. Considering the impoverished
background of the patient, to undergo a high-cost procedure such
as a Heart Transplant was something beyond their possible means.
However, sudden availability of a donor heart and humanly gesture
by the CMD of Radiant Life Care, Mr. Abhay Soi and quick response
from the highly qualified and trained team of doctors brought about a
miraculous outcome for the patient.
THE PROCEDURE
Upon being informed of the availability of a heart of a man who had
just been declared brain dead in a hospital in Jaipur, Dr. Ajay Kaul
and his team immediately swung into action and left for Jaipur at the
earliest to harvest the heart.
After taking several permissions and co-ordinations with
numerous departments, a green corridor was created in Jaipur
and Delhi, for unhindered transport of the heart to and from the
airport. The harvesting team included: Dr. Sushant Srivastava,
Dr. Jasbir Singh Khanuja, Dr. Dheeraj Kumar Gandotra and Dr.
Anupam.
The harvested heart was flown down to Delhi and without
losing any precious ticking moment, the heart was successfully
transplanted in the wee hours of the night by a team of expert cardiac
surgeons led by Dr. Ajay Kaul, Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Dr. Sameer and
the entire CTVS team.
THE RESULT
After the successful transplant, the patient is recovering well and
doing fine. He and his family is overwhelmed with happiness and have
the deepest gratitude for all the people who have given him a new
lease on life.
