A Discussion on Care for Mature Skin

As we grow older, the years of sun exposure and the damage caused by it reflect on our skin. In addition, as women get closer to their fifties, most of them are either perimenopausal or menopausal. This causes further changes in the skin brought on by lack of oestrogen and rising levels of testosterone. Some typical changes we see in our skin as we age are: ♦ Skin laxity ♦ Dry skin ♦ Overactive sebaceous glands giving rise to small growths on face such as sebaceous hyperplasia ♦ Acne, especially along lower face ♦ Increased facial hair growth

A good skin care routine, as listed below, is very crucial for people over 40 years of age:

Cleansing: Always use a creamy cleanser as it cleanses your skin without over drying it. Use a nourishing body wash to clean your body.
Toning: Avoid using toners as these can dry your skin. If required, you can use thermal water to hydrate and to refresh your skin.
Moisturising: Use a thick moisturiser that envelops the skin with moisture. Apply it over your face and neck after cleansing. Make sure to apply it on damp skin as this will help trap water in our skin and retain hydration and youthfulness.
Sun Protection: This prevents blotchy complexion, reduces fine lines and wrinkles and prevents skin cancer. The sun prematurely ages our skin, which is a phenomenon known as ‘photoaging’. Use a broad spectrum sunblock with UVA and UVB blocking daily at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply after sweating or washing face.

Certain Do’s and Don’ts for mature skin:

  • Don’t forget to take special care of hands and feet. As we age, they tend to get dry and cracked. Use a hand cream preferably after every hand wash to soften your hands. Use a foot cream before bed, then put socks over them to help lock in the hydration as you sleep.
  • Avoid scrubbing skin as this may dry the skin further.
  • Use an eye cream twice daily as it helps hydrate the eye area and diminish the appearance of dark circles, under-eye bags and crow’s feet.
  • Limit your time in the sun and always wear sunglasses.
  • Use a good anti-aging night serum and cream containing vitamin C, peptides, hyaluonic acid, retinol, glycolic acid, lactic acid etc. as it nourishes and renews the skin with continued use over time.
  • Take special care of your lips as they tend to dry and get cracked with age. Use a hydrating lip balm 3-4 times daily. Also, use lipsticks and glosses that won’t dry out lips.
  • Eat healthy foods as a healthy diet promotes healthy skin. Try to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats.
  • Consult a dermatologist at the earliest if you notice acne, excessive facial hair or any growths or lumps on skin which may or may not cause pain, bleeding or discomfort.
